Scope of Work: This project consisted of multiple block valve installations, actuator installations, and automated control upgrades within the Paullina, Iowa compressor station. The project began with some extensive excavation due to the amount of underground utilities within the facility. A majority of the excavation was performed utilizing a hydro-vac truck to minimize the disturbance. Mass excavation was allowed in areas that the utilities were generally located, and locked out.

The extent of the pipeline work consisted of making hot cuts on existing 16" and 24" gas lines to remove sections long enough to install the new valve assemblies. All of the piping had to be 100% X-ray welds, and hydrostatically tested using water. The piping assemblies and valves are very large in size and require precise layout and fabrication to satisfy the existing pipeline. More times than one the existing pipeline would jump one way or the other after being cut completely making the fit-up very difficult. So, not only having to deal with the presence of gas, getting the fabrication square to the existing line can be a real issue. All in all the valve assemblies were installed with minimal delays due to the above mentioned issues.

We also had a new actuator to install on an existing 24" B-line Regulator valve. This work had to be coordinated and scheduled to enable our outage to take place on the two (2) new valves. This required excavating a hole to roughly 10' deep to remove and replace the actuator.

The electrical work consisted of automation upgrades for the Unit #4 Compressor, along with controls to the three (3) new actuators. Within the compressor building a majority of the wiring and conduit was all explosion proof due to the exposure to the compressors and other massive pieces of equipment.

Along with the electrical work, the Unit #4 Automation upgrades required a substantial amount of stainless steel tubing work to be completed. New transmitters, sight glasses, pocket rockets, limit torques, and other various actuators were installed to control the upgraded #4 Compressor.

This was a very successful project due to the great coordination and communication of subcontractors and Northern Natural Gas. The owner has been very happy with the craftsmanship and attention to detail that Rand Construction drives into our employees.
